With the price of gasoline nearing $2 per litre across much of the province, many people are considering switching to a hybrid vehicle—and for good reason.
There are plenty of options in the hybrid vehicle segment, but let’s focus on the most economical category overall: compact cars. These models are generally more affordable to purchase while offering fuel consumption ratings that are only slightly higher than those of an electric vehicle when you convert electricity costs into gasoline equivalents.
As always, the figures used here come from the Ministry of the Environment’s website.
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and the Toyota Corolla are tied when looking strictly at combined fuel consumption. In both cases, the Ministry of the Environment assigns a combined rating of 4.7 L/100 km. However, the Toyota Corolla achieves 4.4 L/100 km in the city and 5.1 L/100 km on the highway, compared to 4.8 L/100 km in the city and 4.5 L/100 km on the highway for the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
We can therefore say that both compact cars are excellent choices in this category, but the Hyundai Elantra ranks higher than the Corolla according to the Ministry of the Environment. For that reason, it takes the top spot today.
The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total of 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The system is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels.
As for pricing, the 2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid starts at $31,499 before freight and PDI, making it a very accessible car.
